Flyover Gardens is a new hybrid that integrates highway infrastructure and landscape while restoring the urban surface for pedestrian market activity. This “mat building” reorganizes the surface of Ataba Square as a covered pedestrian zone to accommodate spillover market activity. The Flyover Garden civilizes rogue highway engineering structures through the mat prototype that can be repeated throughout Cairo. This vertical urbanism shelters a climate-friendly pedestrian urbanism in this desert landscape while proposing an automobile-scaled landscape above with green desert roofs dotted by ventilation and light towers, akin to an oasis. The mat prototype is an exemplary urban solution, multiplying the urban surface (and shade), and laminating functions of conflicting scales and speeds in the same space.
