The housing master plan for the Good Shepherd Ecumenical Retirement Community shifts age related planning processes from traditional institutional settings toward a more community-based solution. Aging in place is a planning initiative to align housing and health care services with the changing needs of seniors. This avoids the common problems of under-care and over-care. Changing margins of needs would be satisfied through a robust system of urban fabrics: 1) housing, 2) pedestrian, and 3) streets. Balconies, terraces, porches, screened rooms, or patios mediate the public-private interface. This veranda urbanism sponsors greater sociability, stewarding the social capital that differentiates neighborhoods from subdivisions.
